19th Century Napoleon III Ebonized & Inlaid Pier Cabinet. Featuring mother of pearl and gilt inlays, bronze mounts throughout, a white marble top and a finished interior enclosed in a conforming base, this cabinet measures 33″ wide, 16″ deep, and 44 1/4″ high overall.
Gaining popularity with cabinetmakers during the eclectic revivalism of Napoleon III and his wife Empress Eugenie, pier cabinets are relatively small elegant cabinets intended for use in entrance halls and drawing rooms, where they stood in the masonry piers between windows or pilasters. Similar in function to a console and usually surmounted by a pier glass, these wall cabinets typically featured a rich marble top above exotic inlays or contrasting lacquer-work and ebony stains. Designed to be admired, this pier cabinet combines quintessential neoclassical lines and stylistic elements with the ornate abundance that defined Second Empire furniture.
